When your baby is just born, he doesn’t get up to much. You can leave him lying in the middle of the floor while you do a few chores without having to worry about what he’ll get into. All that changes as soon as your child starts to make the transition from baby to toddler.
There is a lot of advice out there on how to make your home safer for a budding toddler. You definitely want to cover outlets and secure cabinet doors, but it turns out, there are a lot more things you should be doing to make your home safe.
Here are some tips you may not have thought of, but they will definitely keep your child safer in your home.
Replace Your Blinds
One of the best things you can do to keep your home safe for your child is to replace the blinds. Although wrapping up the cords on your existing blinds is better than nothing, it really is better if you update window treatments with a style that doesn’t have cords at all.
Many modern blinds don’t have cords. For example, roller shades can be pulled from the bottom. Both shutters and vertical blinds utilize a rigid stick, so there are no cords for your baby to get tangled in.
While you’re at it, you should take a look at your draperies too. Avoid draperies that hang to the floor. If you really want to prevent the curtains and rod from crashing to the floor, opt for valances instead.
Move Your House Plants
If your child can reach it, you can bet he will pull it down to the floor. That’s not such a big deal when it comes to things like books and movies. It’s a huge deal when it’s a house plant!

Not only will the plant end up scattering soil all over the carpet, which means you have to drop what you’re doing to clean it up, it may also mean your child needs to jump in the bath. Not to mention, the trauma to the plant!
Before your child has the chance to destroy your prized African Violet, and your carpet in the process, move it out of reach.
Get Rid of the Chemicals in the Cabinets
There are a lot of harmful chemicals to keep your toddler away from. Putting locks on cabinet doors is a good way to keep kids from coming in contact with them. But, if your child manages to undo the lock, or if you forget to lock the doors after you’re done in the cabinet, you could end up with one sick kid.
Instead, keep everything that could be harmful when ingested in the garage or in a cabinet out of reach. That includes finding a new place for:
• Laundry detergent
• Insecticides and pesticides
• Bleach
• Batteries
• Nail polish and remover
• Drain cleaners
• Air fresheners
Wash Your Baby’s Toys
Babies love to put things in their mouths. There are some things you obviously don’t want them sucking on. That’s what their toys are for!
It turns out that your child’s toys could be just as, if not more dangerous, than some of the other things in your home he could end up putting his mouth on.
It’s important to wash your baby’s toys, especially if he has been sharing them with other children, or if you have pets in the home. It’s also important to wash toys as soon as you bring them home. Who knows what kind of chemicals they could be harboring from the manufacturing process!
Fortunately, it’s easy. A dip in soapy water works, but so does boiling water or a spritz of disinfecting spray.
Let Them Practice Using the Stairs
It’s a no-brainer to put up a baby gate up as soon as your little one is mobile, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid the stairs. It’s actually good for your child to practice!
Once every day or two, remove the baby gate, and help your child practice climbing the stairs from the bottom and going down the stairs from the top. The quicker he learns how to use the stairs, the quicker you can get rid of the baby gate, and the quicker you can stop worrying about him tumbling to the bottom!
When baby proofing your home, it’s a good idea to make a list so there isn’t anything you forget. Just make sure you add these tips to your list too!
