Travelling alone definitely has its advantages; you don’t have to fit in with anyone’s preferences and you have a refreshingly nice level of freedom, you might see a bus about to depart and decide to jump on and see where it takes you!
If you are planning a solo trip to Singapore or another exotic place, here are a few solo travel hacks that we all should know.
- Download Google Maps – Preloading Google Maps allows you to use it when you don’t have an Internet connection. You might be looking for directions to the best buffet in Singapore and have no Wi-Fi, or you want to walk from Marina Bay Sands to Orchard Road, so download the app today and never get lost again!
- Carry a couple of power banks – Why not one I hear you ask? There will come a day when your device needs a charge and your main power bank has been fully discharged. If, for example, you were hiking in the Malaysian jungle, at the end of a long day, that power bank might be on low. These portable chargers weigh next to nothing and who knows, it might actually save your life in an emergency!
- Carry a first aid kit – You probably have this one covered, if not, Google can help you find a comprehensive travel safety kit that contains essentials. It takes up very little room in your luggage and when there is no one around to help, at least you can clean a wound. Click here for more travel hacks.
- Roll clothes – T-shirts, socks and underwear can all be rolled, as can casual pants and any garment that doesn’t need ironing. You’ll be surprised at how much space you save, especially when you wish to travel light. This ingenious hack was discovered in the 1960s by hippies travelling around Europe and despite some heavy exposure, some people still don’t know about clothes rolling.
- Take photos of your passport/visa – If you have to show some ID, rather than digging out your passport, simply bring up the images and in most cases, that is sufficient. Also take a snapshot of your visa, as you might be asked to show your legal status in a foreign country. In the highly unlikely event you lose your passport, this will make things move along quicker, as the images confirm who you are.
- Walk in hotel bookings – We have all been conditioned to believe that the cheapest rates are online, when, in fact, you can often find the cheapest rates when you walk into a hotel lobby. Late cancellations are not usually added to the online vacancy database, so you might get lucky. Don’t book a hotel that isn’t precisely what you are looking for, rather wait until you arrive and try a walk-in.
Whether travelling to Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand, we hope the above hacks go some way to helping you plan the perfect trip.
